Southern Miss Baseball extended its winning streak to 11 games with a 10-5 midweek victory against the University of New Orleans Privateers.

This win came only a night after grabbing a road win at Tulane that brought their road-winning streak to 11 games.

However, it was the Privateers that struck first, scoring three runs and shocking the Golden Eagles at first.

But then in the bottom of the second inning, The Golden Eagles came alive and tied the game with two home runs in the inning.

Will McGillis hit a solo home run and Carson Paetow hit a two-run home run.

This was a back-and-forth game as the Privateers took the lead back 5-3 in the fourth inning.

But, in the sixth inning, Gabe Montenegro hit a clutch three-run bomb to take the lead.

This was Montenegro’s first home run of the season and first in 188 at bats.

“That bat right there with that situation, it just felt really good” Montenegro said.

After that home run in the sixth inning, The Golden Eagles did not lose the lead and in the eighth inning, they sealed the game with four more runs.

The pitching had some struggles tonight, with starter Tyler Stuart being pulled after allowing four hits and three runs in the first inning.

Niko Mazza came in the game and had two solid innings before being pulled.

On the night, there were six pitching changes for the Golden Eagles.

Aubrey Gillentine was credited with the win and Dalton Rogers was credited with the save on the night for Southern Miss.

“We had really big moments in our relief pitching. Niko Mazza came in and did a great job for us, (Justin) Storm did, Aubrey Gillentine did and of course Dalton Rogers was there at the end with two clean innings to get the save,” Head Coach Scott Berry said.

After the win, Southern Miss is now 29-8 on the season, and their winning streak moves to 11.

The Golden Eagles now focus on an upcoming series against the Rice Owls in conference play this weekend at Pete Taylor Park.
